UPDATES

I will list all updates here. Please check back before your next lesson in case things change, or after any major government announcements.

17/03/2020 - Following the government announcement on the 16/03/2020:

Students who visit my home for lessons: I would like to confirm that the situation hasn't changed and I am happy to continue as I have described below if you are comfortable to do so. If I don't hear from you I will assume to continue as normal although I will follow-up a few hours before your next lesson.

Powerhouse Studios students: I have made the decision to move lessons to Skype and I will be in contact with you individually about this.

In all cases, please keep in contact with me. I am happy to facilitate you and provide support however I can but please keep me in the loop. If I don't hear from you I will assume lessons are going ahead and my usual cancellation policy applies(48 hours)

COVID-19

Dear current students/parents,

Due to the rise of cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the UK, and following advice from the government and the Musicians’ Union to help slow down the spread of the virus, I am considering temporarily switching to conducting lessons via Skype video calling instead.

At the moment I will continue to teach from my home and Powerhouse Studios as normal, but I will review this daily following advice from the government and the MU. If you would prefer to start remote lessons straight away, this is of course fine and I have details below.

Just to clarify, I do not have any symptoms of COVID-19, nor am I aware that any of my students do. Please let me know straight away if you or any people you live with develop any symptoms, so that we can move to remote lessons to help slow the spread of the virus.

What precautions am I taking and what can I ask of you.

Out of respect to me, my home, and my other students, please could I ask that all students follow government advice, including hand washing among others, which of course I am and will continue to follow as well.

I will be ensuring that my home teaching room is cleaned after each student, tissues will be readily available during lessons, soap, and hand-washing facilities. For Powerhouse Studios students, tissues will be readily available and as soon as I am able to purchase some, hand sanitiser. In the meantime I would recommend that you arrive in good time to your lesson and use the studios own hand-washing facilities.

Drumsticks - please could you bring your own with you to all lessons. I will not be lending any sticks out but I do have a small amount of sticks that I can give to you to keep should you need them, please let me know before your next lesson.

All students be aware that any drum kit adjustments will be done by myself.

SKYPE

My preferred method of remote teaching is Microsoft’s Skype software. This software is completely free for Skype-to-Skype video calling, and apps are available for Windows PCs, Macs, iPhones, iPads and Android phones. Although a computer/laptop should provide the best quality.

You can download it here: https://www.skype.com/en/get-skype/

Once you’ve downloaded it and made an account(students under 18 must use a parents account), add me as a contact. My Skype address is info@jakeperrett.com

Once we’re connected, we can begin a video call and start the lesson.

In place of my handwritten grooves, fills and exercises I will be using music notation software to write out exercises and through Skype's screen sharing features you will be able to see what I am writing to then use to play along. Following the lesson I will then send a pdf document of what was taught that can be printed and used for practice.

If you would like to proceed with this method then please let me know and I will send out a full document with camera positioning guidance, safeguarding, and a general guide to how the lesson should work and what a student can do to help me make the lesson as smooth as possible.

ANY QUESTIONS

If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to contact me.

As I'm sure you can imagine, when I set up my private teaching business several years ago, I didn't think I would have to be dealing with anything quite like this. Therefore, if you think I have missed anything, please let me know and I will of course address the issue immediately.

Thank you for your understanding and I hope that you are all well.
